Pertama mengenal lagu ini sekitar tahun 1989 saat saya masih SMA, waktu itu Hilman-lupus membahas lagu ini di majalah Gadis, lagu ini yang membuat saya terlecut kembali bersemangat ketika saya gagal dan jatuh

perasaan si penulis lagu bisa sampai karena ternyata Ada kisah sedih di balik lirik inspiratif "The Greatest Love of All". Lagu yang diambil dari album pertama Whitney ini diciptakan oleh Michael Masser dan Linda Creed.Sebelumnya dibawakan George Benson pada tahun 1977. Ketika menciptakan lagu ini, Linda telah didiagnosa mengidap kanker payudara. Perasaannya ketika harus menghadapi tantangan terberat dalam hidup, tetap tegar tanpa tahu akan bertahan atau tidak, dituangkan dalam lagu ini.
Linda meninggal pada April 1986. Saat itu lagu ini sedang sangat populer di Amerika Serikat. Meski tidak menang, tahun yang sama Whitney dinominasikan dalam Grammy Awards untuk kategori Record of the Year lewat lagu ini.
